A QR code is simply made up of dots that form a pattern which can be either alphanumeric, binary, numeric, or kanji that contains data that can be scanned on a mobile smartphone.
A kanji is a form of character used in Japan. The initials, ‘QR’ stands for Quick Response. There are two types of QR codes. We have the static QR code and the Dynamic QR code.
Static QR code is the type that houses the destination site’s URL directly and thus cannot be modified.
This makes it less useful than the Dynamic QR code. The Dynamic QR code on the other hand uses a short URL which is then re-directs to the final destination URL site.
The short URL also works as an intermediary which then connects the code to the data. The short URL can be changed after the QR code has been generated.
A QR code works similarly to a bar code that is normally used in the supermarket. iPhones and Samsung smartphones can be used to scan the QR codes easily by using the main camera app in the phones.
About GHQR Code
The GHQR code was recently launched in Ghana alongside the Proxy Pay Platform by the Ghana Interbank Payments and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS).
The GHQR code is an easy and different way through which people can make payments to merchants by scanning the GHQR code of the merchant on their smartphones which will be similar to paying the merchant with physical cash.
The GHQR is also a universal QR code because a merchant can receive payment from customers’ bank accounts from different banks as well as any other payment services from all over the country by displaying just one GHQR code.  Â
The GHQR code, which translates to Ghana Interoperable QR code solution, is a QR Code system in Ghana that will afford Ghanaian users the ability to make payments for the goods they buy by scanning a QR code which will then make the payment directly to the person selling the goods.
Sellers who will make use of the QR code platform will be able to receive payment for their goods immediately from their customers.
The payments will be made directly from the customer’s bank account, virtual wallet, and mobile money wallet.
People who will want to use the GHQR platform will have to visit their respective banks and then sign up for the platform.
Banks That Support GHQR Code
There are some banks in Ghana at the moment which is offering the GHQR platform service to their customers.
Customers who transact their finances with the following banks can visit them and sign up for the GHQR platform service.
- Zenith bank
- Cal bank
- Fidelity bank
- Ghana Commercial bank
- Guaranty bank
- Ecobank
- United Bank of Africa
- CBG
Business people who apply for the GHQR code platform service will be given a unique GHQR code sticker.
They will also be able to input their merchant ID anytime they dial a USSD code that will be used to confirm the payment that has been made.
How It Works
After a merchant registers for the GHQR code platform service and gets his unique GHQR code sticker, he or she displays it in her shop.
Customers who buy from the merchant will then scan the displayed code with their smartphones after purchasing from the merchant.
They can input the merchant’s unique terminal ID after they dial a USSD code.
The customer will then enter the amount of money he or she has to pay to the merchant and then approve the payment.
The account of the merchant is then instantly credited with the amount right that moment.
The transaction success will then be sent as a notification to both the merchant and the customer.
