Established in 2006, Tecno is a subsidiary of Transsion Holdings, headquartered in Shenzhen, China. George Zho, the founder and CEO, has played a crucial role in the company’s growth.

Tecno is primarily engaged in the business of electronic products, with a notable focus on smartphones.

In 2020, Tecno reported an impressive turnover of over $1 billion, showcasing its substantial presence and success in the electronic devices market.

The company has strategically concentrated much of its business operations on the African continent, making notable strides in providing smartphones to the diverse and growing population in Africa, particularly in Ghana.

Tecno History 

Tecno Mobile, initially established as Tecno Telecom Limited in 2006 by George Zho, transformed its corporate structure.

The company’s name was later changed to Transsion Holdings, with Tecno becoming a subsidiary of this larger conglomerate.

In 2007, Transsion Holdings introduced another brand, Itel, which focused on selling electronics in Africa and gained recognition as the ‘most student-friendly brand’ in 2017.

By 2008, Tecno strategically shifted its target market to focus entirely on the African continent, recognizing it as a lucrative market for its products.

The company swiftly became one of the top three smartphone brands in Africa by 2010. Tecno made notable strides, releasing a smartphone ‘made in Ethiopia’ and announcing its first device running on the Android Marshmallow platform.

The Phantom 6 and Phantom 6 Plus were introduced in the same year, featuring biometric authentication for enhanced security.

In 2017, Tecno launched the Phantom 8 and the Tecno Camon CX in Dubai. Tecno smartphones, known for their affordability, gained popularity in Nigeria, particularly with the Tecno Spark series launched in August 2017.

Expanding its global reach, Tecno entered the Indian market in 2016 and explored other potential markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan.

The Tecno Camon CM, launched in 2018, featured an 18:9 aspect ratio, marking a significant design shift for Tecno.

The Camon I4 was released in Pakistan in April of the same year. In 2020, Tecno introduced the Pova in the Indian market, featuring a massive 6000mAh battery and a quad-camera setup.

Expanding further, Tecno entered the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America markets. The brand made headlines in 2020 with the announcement of Nigerian musician Wizkid as its brand ambassador.

The deal was unveiled at the launch of the Tecno Camon 15 Premier in Lagos, Nigeria, solidifying Tecno’s commitment to expanding its presence globally.
